About the book

The Manual of Nature Conservation Law will prove to be a valuable resource to all those involved with nature conservation including lawyers, planners, ecologists, local government officers and those working for wildlife organisations.

The sources of wildlife law are numerous and the law increasingly complex.  Many of the key statutes, such as the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, have been heavily amended and it is difficult to piece together an accurate statement of the law as it stands.  This Manual brings together the legislation in one convenient volume.  The provisions are comprehensively annotated with cross–references to definitions, commencement dates and related provisions including statutory instruments and guidance.  Key cases on the interpretation of the law are also set out.  A notable feature of the book is that cross–references include page numbers enabling quick and easy reference.  This can be seen in our sample pages.  Other features include a clear layout to the schedules to the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981; Schedule 5 is classified into classes of animals and Schedule 8 is classified into divisions of plants.

The  Manual includes the full range of material that the practitioner will need.  The protection of species, nature reserves, SSSIs, national parks, biodiversity, the statutory agencies and access to the countryside are among the areas covered.  The Wild Birds and Habitats Directives, together with their associated annexes, are set out in full.  The key statutes, the Conservation Regulations and the Offshore Marine Conservation Regulations are also included.  PPS 9, the list of priority habitats and species, a list of useful addresses and a comprehensive index complete the Manual.  Click here for a full contents list.

Periodic updates will be included on this website [in 2010 these will be available on a subscription basis].  The latest update includes amendments to Schedule 5 to the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and to the Conservation Regulations 1994.

Building on the success of the first edition this volume has been updated to include the substantial legislation that has been enacted since the earlier edition; reviews of this second edition.
